All of the City’s 2600 parking meters accept the New Haven City Card. It’s fast and easy to use:

Insert your New Haven City Card into the meter as shown. The meter will flash the card balance three times and then display “Push Btn”. Push the button to add time to the meter. The more times you push the more time will be added to the meter. Stop pressing when the time you need is displayed or the maximum time allowed is reached. Wait for the meter to display “Pull Card”. Remove your card.

Every meter has instructions on the front, a number to call if you encounter a problem, a meter number and details on parking rates and times.

The maximum time limit for every meter is printed just below the display. Some meters allow you to park for up to 12 hours; others for as little as 15 minutes.

The New Haven City Card does not allow you to buy more than the maximum time allowed at the metered space. Unlike coins the card does not allow you to ‘overspend’ on a meter that has reached its maximum time limit.

If you encounter a problem with a meter call the City at the number printed on the front. Remember to note the street name and meter number so you have them handy when you call.

Parking Garages and Lots

Several downtown garages and parking lots also take the New Haven City Card and more are being added.
